Across Vietnam Photography Workshop

The day begins along Hanoi Ceramic Road, where we work with shape, color relationships, repetition, and tighter graphic compositions. We then photograph colorful fabrics drying outdoors, using natural light to explore layers, texture, and visual rhythm. In Hung Yen, the focus shifts to documentary photography around traditional soy sauce production, followed by a bamboo basket village where hands, tools, materials, and working environments provide strong opportunities for environmental portraits and detail shots. Throughout the day, we concentrate on simplifying busy scenes and building stronger compositions from everyday subjects.

At sunrise, we photograph water lilies and local farmers, working with reflections, color balance, negative space, and the relationship between people and the surrounding landscape. After the morning session, we fly to Hue. In the afternoon, we photograph inside the Imperial Citadel, using gates, corridors, architectural symmetry, shadows, and layers to create structured compositions. The session combines architecture, environmental portraiture, and documentary photography while paying close attention to changing light across the historic complex.

We start before sunrise at the Hue lagoon, photographing fishermen, traditional nets, boats, reflections, and movement in low light. Depending on conditions, we work with both faster shutter speeds and longer exposures to create different interpretations of the scene. Later, Thanh Tien village provides opportunities for portraits, close details, color studies, and photographs of traditional paper flower making. In the afternoon and evening, we photograph candlelight and flower lanterns at an ancient temple, concentrating on exposure control, warm color, highlights, shadows, and the atmosphere created by multiple small light sources.

The morning begins at Hue’s abandoned water park, where the large dragon structure provides opportunities for architectural, wide-angle, and more abstract compositions. We then travel to Da Nang to photograph red-shanked douc langurs, working primarily with telephoto lenses, subject isolation, clean backgrounds, gesture, and timing. In Hoi An, the focus shifts to portraiture with a Vietnamese elder before we photograph the old town after sunset. Lanterns, shopfronts, reflections, moving people, and mixed artificial light provide excellent material for night street photography and low-light composition.

At sunrise, we photograph fishermen working with traditional Ro nets near Hoi An. The large circular nets offer strong graphic forms, reflections, symmetry, and opportunities for both wide environmental frames and compressed telephoto compositions. We then photograph net repair and sewing, concentrating on hands, repetition, texture, and documentary details. After traveling south to Phu Yen, we work with the long wooden bridge and traditional coracle making before finishing at a coastal lagoon. Sunset provides opportunities to combine boats, water, reflections, foreground elements, and changing color across the sky.

Weather and sea conditions determine the morning session along the Phu Yen coastline. We look for working fishermen, moving boats, cast nets, waves, and human activity, using shutter speed creatively to either freeze action or introduce controlled motion. Telephoto lenses are especially useful for isolating gestures and compressing layers across the water. As we continue into Khanh Hoa, we photograph fishing communities, boatyards, craftsmen, and coastal work. The emphasis throughout the day is documentary photography: anticipating moments, controlling backgrounds, and building coherent visual sequences rather than relying on single isolated images.

We photograph salt farmers in Khanh Hoa during the early light, when the reflective surfaces create strong highlights, silhouettes, geometric patterns, and layered compositions. The session is particularly suitable for longer focal lengths, allowing us to compress workers, salt piles, and repeating forms. We then photograph fishing-net repair, concentrating on environmental portraits and detail. Near Ninh Thuan, the day ends with a shepherd and flock crossing the dunes at sunset. Here we work with backlight, silhouettes, dust, movement, and subject placement within a simplified landscape.

At Nam Cuong, the dunes become a study of form, shadow, scale, and minimal composition. Early light creates clean tonal separation across the sand, while a Cham model allows us to explore the relationship between human form, costume color, and negative space. We then photograph traditional Cham pottery, working with portraits, hands, texture, smoke, and available light. Later, Mui Ne offers another interpretation of the dune landscape, where longer lenses can isolate patterns and compress overlapping ridges as the direction and quality of light continue to change.

Our final morning begins at a coastal fish market in Binh Thuan. Fast-changing activity provides opportunities to practice anticipation, layering, environmental portraiture, and working efficiently in crowded scenes. We then photograph a Cham artist, concentrating on portrait lighting, expression, background control, and the relationship between subject and environment. After the session, we continue to Ho Chi Minh City and conclude the workshop at Tan Son Nhat International Airport at approximately 12:00 p.m. We recommend booking onward flights after 3:00 p.m.
